Leinster Regiment - other rank PoWs 1914

There are sixty-six names on this list which have been transcribed from a single source held at the Imperial War Museum. Catalogue reference B.O.2 1/258 is a four-page typed list of Leinster Regiment Prisoners of War, sent on 23rd December 1918 by the Leinster Regiment Prisoners of War Fund to Sir Ernest Goodhart. My full transcription of this Leinster Regiment PoW roll call also gives the men's home addresses.

You can read more about this Prisoner of War data source on my 1914 PoWs page. The image on this post shows a rather fetching Victor Hawkins who, as far as I know was not a Leinster Regiment man but was a PoW at Dulmen. "Camp Theatre Dulmen" is somewhat appropriate here.

Irish regiments - enlistment registers 1920-1922

The National Army Museum has published the enlistment records of nearly 12,000 men who joined Irish regiments between 1920 and 1922. This from the NAM website:

"The Connaught Rangers, the Leinster Regiment, the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, the Royal Irish Regiment and the Royal Munster Fusiliers were units of the British Army, which were disbanded following the establishment of the independent Irish Free State in 1922. The enlistment books contain records of soldiers serving in these regiments in the period 1920-22."

To search the Irish Soldiers' Records, follow the link. Helpfully, the search box allows you to search on any indexed field, which means you can search on the man's home address, for instance, as well as his name or regimental number. Many of the men have prior service recorded but unfortunately this information has not been indexed. Now there's a potential project for someone...

Leinster Regiment - PoW Other Ranks - 1914

This post will look at men serving with the Leinster Regiment who became prisoners of war on or before Christmas Day 1914. All of these men's names appear on a four-page typed list which was sent to Sir Ernest Goodhart on the 23rd December 1918 by the Leinster Regiment Prisoners of War Fund. The document is housed at the Imperial War Museum under B.O.2 1/258.

For background on this list and others I have published, read my post/index on the 1914 Other Rank PoWs.. With one or teo exceptions, the Leinster Regiment men noted below also have home or next of kin addresses noted against their names.

The full transcription of this list is available for sale as a download or CD for £20. Contact me if you would like to purchase a copy.

The photograph on this page shows a British PoW in the roll of Shylock at the Dulmen prison camp in 1918.

The Leinster Regiment - 1st & 2nd Battalions

The Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians) was formed in 1881 from the 100th (Prince of Wales's Royal Canadian) Regiment of Foot and the 109th Regiment of Foot (Bombay Infantry). The old 100th became the 1st Battalion, and the 109th, the 2nd Battalion.

There are over 10,000 Leinster Regiment pension and service records (for this regiment - and its antecedents) in various War Office series held at the National Archives. Clicking on the link will take you to the results on Findmypast but you will need a subscription or Pay-Per-View credits to actually view the records. Some of these records can also be viewed on-line on Ancestry although Findmypast has by far the most comprehensive service record collection.

Use the regimental numbers and dates on which these were issued, below, to determine parameters for when your own Leinster Regiment ancestor would have joined up. Note though that these numbers are only for regular enlistments. Special Reserve and Extra Reserve battalions operated completely separate regimental number sequences.

When Britain went to war with Germany a few months later, the Leinster Regiment responded to the call by forming two new service battalions in August and October 1914. Neither of these battalions drew their numbers from the series above which was still maintained but reserved for men signing up for regular terms of enlistment (seven years with the Colours, five on the Reserve) rather than for war-time service only.

The regiment was disbanded in 1922 following the creation of the Independent State of Ireland, but there is still an active Regimental Association, and an informative website here: Regimental Association of the Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians).

“STAND TO” A Diary of the Trenches 1915-1918

This is one of the classic memoirs of the Great War, written by an officer of the 2nd Battalion the Leinster Regiment who joined his battalion in the trenches in May 1915 and served with them to the end of the war. It is, says the N&M Press, "a memorable account and a great tribute to the soldiers from the South of Ireland... a vivid account, supported by some wonderful sketches and examples of the spirit and humour of the Irish soldier."
