There are 365 men on this list of men from the Royal Army Medical Corps who were captured by the Germans on or before Christmas Day 1914. I have transcribed this data from the following Imperial War Museum collection:

Royal Army Medical Corps - PoW Other Ranks 1914

There are 365 men in this list of Royal Army Medical Corps soldiers captured on or before the 25th December 1914. The names appear on a nine-page typed list sent in by the officer in charge of records, RAMC, to Sir Ernest Goodhart in February 1919. These days, that list is field at the Imperial War Museum, catalogue reference, B.O.2 1/127.

The vast majority of the medical index cards for these men DO NOT note that they were prisoners of war and so, apart from the difficult-to-search ICRC PoW database, this may be the first time that this list has been published; quite a nice bonus for medal collectors, I would have thought. A lot of the men served with 4th Field Ambulance and my notations below are simply as a result of looking at medal index cards for some of these men. Again, most of theese MICs note the Field Ambulance served with.

South Eastern Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance, RAMC

Here are some regimental numbers and corresponding joining dates for the South Eastern Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance, a Territorial Force unit of the Royal Army Medical Corps.  The unit started numbering from 1 in April 1908.

When the Territorial Force re-numbered in 1917, the number block 433001 to 434000 was issued to this RAMC Field Ambulance.

3rd & 4th Scottish General Hospitals

Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow was opened in 1904. In 1914 it was requisitioned by the Royal Army Medical Corps and operated as the 3rd and 4th Scottish Hospitals.

My data on personnel working for these two hospitals is very thin indeed but it looks as though men joining the 3rd Scottish General Hospital commenced a new number series in early 1913, these numbers later suffixed with the letter A. So for instance, 91A George Pirie joined the 3rd Scottish General Hospital on the 14th November 1914, 92A John Gracie on the 21st, 96A Archibald McDonald on the 2nd December 1914 and so on.

Men joining the 4th Scottish General Hospital were given numbers from a different series and again, it looks as though a new number series was also begun for these men in early 1913. These numbers had no suffix and it seems logical to suggest that this was deliberate and a way of differentiating 3rd SGH men from 4th SGH men.

1st Scottish General Hospital

The 1st Scottish General Hospital was situated at Aberdeen and during WW1 had capacity for 62 officer beds and 1297 Other Rank beds.

My data for Royal Army Medical Corps personnel serving at the hospital is thin and I would welcome additional details to help fill some of the gaps.

1st Home Counties Field Ambulance, RAMC

According to The Long, Long Trail, in 1914 each infantry Division had three Field Ambulances, each of which was divided into three Sections. Section A comprised 65 men and section B and C comprised 128 men in total. You can read more about Field Ambulances and the breakdown of the Sections, by clicking on the link above.

This post is concerned with numbering in the 1st Home Counties Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, between 1908 and August 1914. All of the numbering information in this post has been gleaned from service records in WO 363 and WO364 at the National Archives. These same records can also be accessed on-line via Ancestry which is currently offering a FREE 14-DAY TRIAL.

There were three Home Counties Field Ambulances in all. The 1st was headquartered at Maidstone in Kent, the 2nd at Ashford in Kent and the 3rd at Surbiton in Surrey. All three HCFAs used separate number series and all three maintained separate number series when the Territorial Force was re-numbered in 1917.

I don't know for certain, but I suspect that none of the HCFAs started numbering from 1 in 1908. A lot of those early Territorial Force attestations are by men who had previously been serving as Volunteers, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to discover that serving Volunteers retained their old numbers whilst new recruits were given the next number along from the old Volunteer series.

There was obviously some thought given to numbering however, because in January 1912 we see the old series abandoned and a new series beginning at 2000 for the 1st HCFA. The same thing happened with the 2nd and 3rd HCFAs. The second started a new series from 2500 (around March 1912) and the 3rd HCFA started a new series from 3000 (around February 1913).

When the Territorial Force renumbered in 1917, the 1st HCFA was allocated numbers within the block 493001 to 495000.
