Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) - Other Rank PoWs 1914

This is an edited roll of Other Ranks serving with the Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment), who were captured by the enemy and became Prisoners of War on or before the 25th December 1914. Read more about this data source on my 1914 PoWs page.

This data has been transcribed from two sources at the Imperial War Museum:

1. B.O.2 1/172. This is a 12-page typed list of Queen's Prisoners of War. The list is undated and contains no details of the sender or the recipient.
2. B.O.2 1/273. This is a fifteen-page, typed document dated 16th January 1919 and sent by the Prisoners of War Relief Fund, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment

My full transcription of this Queen's data (not reproduced here) also contains the following information against some or all of the names:

Battalion
Date of capture
Home address
Next of kin
Notes
Transcriber's notes

There are over 400 names on this list, the equivalent of four complete companies under the old eight-company system which the majority of these men would have been familiar with.  The majority of the men listed here were serving with the 2nd Battalion when captured but there are also men listed here who were serving with the 1st Battalion and, curiously, the 5th, 8th and 13th Battalions. Unless those men listed as serving with these latter three battalions had been attached to a regular battalion, their names quite clearly do not belong in this list as these battalions were not even overseas by 1914. Men serving with the 5th Battalion are easy to spot as their six-digit Territorial Force numbers stand out like a sore thumb. Similarly, a G/ prefix suggests service in either the 8th or 13th Battalions. An S/ prefix indicates the Special Reserve whilst the majority of those numbers with no prefix at all should have been prefixed with L/, indicating regular enlistment.

The original documents, faded and scanned many years ago, are at best, challenging to decipher. Any errors in transcription are entirely my own.

The full transcription is available for sale as a download or CD for £20. Contact me if you would like to purchase a copy.

Durham Light Infantry - Other Rank PoWs 1914

This is an extract of men from the 1st and 2nd Battalions, Durham Light Infantry, who were captured by the enemy and became Prisoners of War on or before the 25th December 1914. Read more about this data source on my 1914 PoWs page. This data is taken from two lists sent to Sir Ernest Goodhart: an undated hand-written list (source unknown) and a typed list sent by the Colonel in Charge of Infantry Records, York on the 20th January 1919.  My full transcription of this DLI data (not reproduced here) also contains the following information:

Royal Fusiliers - Other Rank PoWs 1914

This is an extract from a roll call of 247 men from the Royal Fusiliers who were said to have been captured on or before 25th December 1914.  You can read more about the source of this 1914 Prisoner of War roll on a new page I have created on this blog: 1914 PoWs. Amongst the Royal Fusiliers' Prisoners of War is a certain L/13814 Private Sidney F Godley (pictured above) who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his action at Mons on the 23rd August 1914.

This list is almost certainly incomplete and in my experience does not, for instance, contain the names of those men who were captured and subsequently repatriated before the cessation of hostilities.  There are also some errors. For instance, the notation on the medal index card of MR/8108 Private C J Webb states "P. of W. 27/4/16" which is obviously a good deal later than the 25th December 1914 cut-off date.

Nevertheless, this list, and others like it which I will publish over the following days, represents a fascinating snapshot of the regular army in 1914. Here we have a company's worth of trained soldiers taken out of action as a result of being captured by the enemy; men the British Army could ill-afford to lose.

The majority of the men on this list have the L/ prefix indicating regular soldiers, but there are also a number of men with the SR/ prefix indicating that they were Special Reservists. Godley's number indicates that he enlisted in December 1909 but there are many men who are considerably older hands. Corporal Arthurs, for instance, originally enlisted in 1898.  With the exception of L/10809 Private F J Taylor who was a 1st Battalion man, all of the men listed below were serving with the 4th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers at the time of their capture. Any errors in transcription from the original badly faded documents are entirely my own.

The full transcription is available for sale as a download or CD for £20. Contact me if you would like to purchase a copy.

Regimental number prefixes - a Royal Sussex Regiment case history

Earlier this year I responded to a query concerning a Royal Sussex Regiment man whose regimental number was recorded variously as SR/2245 (GRO Death Index Army Other Ranks), S/2245 (Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Soldiers Died in The Great War), 2245 (De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour) and LSR/2245 (medal index card). So which prefix, if any, is the correct one?

The Royal Sussex Regiment, in common with most other infantry regiments, employed a number of different regimental number prefixes during the First World War but L/ and LSR/ were both used inconsistently before the war; L/ to denote a regular enlistment in either the 1st or 2nd Battalions, and LSR to denote an enlistment into the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion. These prefixes would be more consistently applied from August 1914 when men joining the newly forming service battalions for wartime service only had their numbers prefixed by G/ (for General Service) or SD/ (if they joined the South Down battalions, the 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th (Reserve) battalions, and men joining the Special Reserve for wartime service only had their number prefixed with GSSR/ (or General Service Special Reserve).

So the short answer is that LSR is the correct prefix here, and remember too that the medal index card is the official source; showing the number that would have been impressed on the man's medals. SR (on the GRO index) conveys the correct notion that the man served in the Special Reserve and S/ (CWGC and SDGW) is a commonly found prefix for the Special Reserve but was not, as far as I'm aware, used by the Royal Sussex Regiment. The entry in De Ruvigny's roll is the least trustworthy but we should remember that like the National Roll of the Great War series, the information about the men and women whose names appear in these rolls was generally supplied by next of kin rather than from official sources.

As for LSR/, I have also seen this expressed on attestation papers as L/SR/ and, confusingly, G/SR.

For further information on regimental number prefixes see the separate page on this blog and also look out for Howard Williamson's new book which will be published later this year.  The image ion this post shows would-be recruits in Durham in 1914 and appears on the Durham County Record Office website.
