East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry 1908-1914

When Gerald Lisle des Goutles Bown joined the East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry on 15th April 1908 he was already a serving member of the East Riding of Yorkshire Imperial Yeomanry having joined the regiment in February 1903. Given that the regiment recruited at around 100 men per annum between 1908 and 1913, I presume the number he was issued with - 233 - was his original Imperial Yeomanry number.

By 1914 the regiment was headquartered at Beverley with its four squadrons disposed as follows:

A Squadron: Hull
B Squadron: Beverley
C Squadron: Fulford
D Squadron:: Driffield

The regiment formed part of the Yorkshire Mounted Brigade which was administered from York.

872 joined on 9th March 1909
977 joined on 10th March 1910
1019 joined on 3rd January 1911
1122 joined on 1st March 1912
1206 joined on 22nd February 1913
1319 joined on 26th March 1914
1372 joined on 4th August 1914
1611 joined on 3rd September 1914

Two reserve units, the 2/1st and 3/1st, were formed during the First World War and both drew their numbers from the same series above.

There is a searchable database of officers on The National Archives site but I could not see an obvious match for your man: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/officerbritisharmyafter1913.htm

Paul - a great site.

Just clicked the Yorkshire Yeomanry link and up popped the East Riding Yeomanry details - the same as if I click the East Yeomanry link. Is this an error?

Regards, Russ

The link below should take you to your index page:

If you scroll down to the Yeomanry and click on the Yorkshire Dragoons (Queen's Own), then a page is launched for the East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry - which is the page I'm having to post this message from. Not sure if it is just me. Russ
